About the Blog

As I’ve mentioned throughout this site, I’m very passionate about what I do. It is a driving force in my life, and is highly fulfilling. As a result, I tend to talk about it. At length. To everyone I know. I suspect that this blog will be no exception.

Hopefully, my quirky interests and odd sense of humor won’t confuse/infuriate you. If they do, well, I won’t be offended if you decide to read the musings of someone more interesting than little ol’ me.

Oh hell

11.6.09, 09:49am | Blogging/Writing, Eating Habits, Environment, NaBloPoMo

Welp, I didn’t write my blog entry yesterday. Le sigh. I did see this possibility emerging on the horizon around 5pm last night, when I had been wrestling with a stubborn piece of Javascript for several hours. No end was in sight and I was starting to get the feeling that by the time I finally defeated my troublesome foe, I wouldn’t have the brain-power left to write anything worth reading.

But that was only half-true. At quarter to seven, with the assistance of my wonderful code-minded man, the beast was slain and I was finished for the night. Blogging time now, yes?

In which the preacher realizes she’s preaching

11.4.09, 08:03pm | Environment, NaBloPoMo, Philosophy

I was going to write about my household energy usage today, but have opted out for the time being because a.) I waiting on a bit more data, and b.) I realized I was indulging in some pretty unsavory behavior yesterday and I think it’s worth writing about. I committed the cardinal sin of activism, and slipped into preacher-mode. That doesn’t mean I spend the afternoon on a street corner trying to convince the folks around me to “embrace JAY-zuhs!”. Rather, I found myself pushing my beliefs on someone else.

A look at the log and it all becomes clear

11.3.09, 01:35pm | Environment, NaBloPoMo, Seattle Weather

In yesterday’s blog, I wrote about how my brilliant “environmental impact” project was almost stopped in its tracks at the earliest stage: baseline data collection. I had begun feeling overwhelmed and hopeless on the very first day of recording my data. But why? Why was this simple scientific task affecting me on such a personal level?

Looking at my notebook today, the answer is pretty clear. Let’s take a peek at my log from yesterday…

Day Two, in which I feel like a failure before I’ve even begun

11.2.09, 09:35pm | Environment, NaBloPoMo, Philosophy

Gah, my second blog is up so late today! Well, that’s what I get for being unprepared. As it turns out, some of my posts will actually require *gasp* research! Travesty!

My original plan was simple: look at several different environmental/carbon footprint calculators, and along with the original “lifestyle project” from college (more on that below), create a list of different ways in which I impact the environment through the course of my daily life. Then, I’d spend the next 5 days recording every action I took that fell under one of those categories. Easy, right?

Wrong. I found a TON of “footprint” calculators, and far more websites preaching things like “how to become environmentally-friendly!” and “10 easy steps to living green”. Even after I narrowed the list down to a group that I would consider to be reputable (cited sources, provided the math behind their calculators, etc), the task ahead seemed daunting. An hour later, I had come up with my list, but was becoming increasingly demoralized and guilt-ridden. Why did this suddenly seem so HARD?

NaBloPoMo has begun!

11.1.09, 02:35pm | Blogging/Writing, Environment, NaBloPoMo, Tech

Today marks the first day of my participation in NaBloPoMo: National Blog Posting Month. Unlike NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), in which you write a 5,000 words a day for the month of November, participants in NaBloPoMo write one blog entry a day for the span of a month of their choosing. I’m sticking with November, though, so I can empathize effectively with my NaNoWriMo buddies.

My theme for this project is “Reducing my environmental impact"…

The end of an era: Geocities closed down

10.27.09, 06:29pm | Nostalgia, The Internet

Yesterday, Yahoo! finally took down Geocities, a popular free website hosting/building service that’s been around since the mid ‘90s. Twitter was awash with comments on the passing of thisinternet legend, and although I normally frown on nostalgia surrounding technology (heck, technology is all about change, I couldn’t help but feel a bit sentimental myself.

Like most of the things that happened during high school, I remember Geocities with a guilty sort of fondness…

My Brief History of Blogging, or why I’m excited about NaBloPoMo

10.13.09, 10:28am | Blogging/Writing, NaBloPoMo

Like most of my early steps into my current state of complete and utter internet addiction, I started blogging as a result of peer pressure. Well, “peer pressure” isn’t really the right term, more like “peer interest”. I was in college, and many of my friends had created accounts on a website called Livejournal. Several of them had told me what it was all about ("it’s like a public journal! You can talk about anything you want, and post pictures! OoooOOOoooh!") and had suggested that I join too. I figured, why not? It’s not so different from my doofy high school website, and because I could have “friends” on this site, at least I could have some assurance that someone might actually read it.

So I started blogging on Livejournal. My entries consisted of the usual sort of topics you’d expect a college student to write about…

Welcome to my brain!

9.23.09, 04:50pm | Environment, Misc, Tech

Ah, the first blog post! My first opportunity to make an impression on my potential audience. It’s invigorating… also, a bit terrifying.

I should probably let you all know now that I’m a little weird. My particular brand of oddity springs from my roots. Between the hippie parents and the geeky friends who flock to me, it isn’t too surprising that I ended up this way. Don’t worry, though, I enjoy the hell out of it.

This post will likely be the shortest of the lot, simply because I’m writing it while scrambling to launch my website…
